Deepwell is a small town in America’s heartland. We’ll spare you “thriving!” and “idyllic!” and other real estate superlatives: we’re doing okay. Property values are holding (kinda), our population is growing slowly (over 5000!) and our job base is good. We feel blessed.

The town began in the mid-1800s with a handful of farmers, one of whom may have been named Isaiah Deepwell (but most of us think not). There was a fire in 1887, and a lot of records were destroyed. The soil is good here, and Deepwell reached its peak in 1926, when almost 10,000 people called our town “home.”

If you come to visit, there are two events that might be called special: one is Tool Day, dating from the turn of the 20th century at least, when people haul out their tools to show, swap, and maintain. People come from 100 miles around. The second is Halloween: our version is like a progressive costume party and adults participate almost as much as children.

One of Deepwell’s honors is that the Milgrim Ecclesiastical Express stops here. The Express (we call it the God Train) travels around the country every 18 months or so, each time with a new collection of people who speak about their religion. Lately the God Train has included Muslims, Buddhists and other non-Christian religions, much appreciated by many of our newest residents.

Our town gained a bit of notoriety in December of 2009 when Ruby’s Bequest was revealed to exist, because the mysterious will implied that Deepwell was “the town that doesn’t care right.” The citizens of Deepwell have been working hard to dispel this perception since the challenges of Ruby's Bequest began on March 9, 2010. Their slogan is now "Tell It To Someone Who Cares!"
